Today I got my yearly review from work. My manager spent time reading off quotes from others. After I hopped off I was in tears.

The reviews weren’t mean. Instead they were encouraging, friendly, and inspiring. They turned a previously traumatic experience into something amazing that I will never forget.

We often don’t see how we impact people beyond our work. Sincere compliments can have a profound impact on others. Give them out when you can. Definitely give them out during year end reviews.

@Taniwha those complements are so important ❤️

I've never gotten any during a review, but I hope to get some someday, or be able to share things others have said to people 🥰

@hazelweakly I wish companies would take external reviews. I would totally say good things about everyone who has meaningfully contributed to hachyderm or aurae.
@Taniwha I would too! It seems silly to not allow it or consider external work in performance/leveling assessments
@hazelweakly Right! They gain all the advantages of us learning from these projects but the act of learning doesn’t directly increase… [checks notes] shareholder value!
@Taniwha it indirectly increases it though, but that's a level of sophisticated reasoning beyond the people who invented the concept of [checks notes] futures contracts

@hazelweakly @Taniwha me being nosey.

I wish employers would be able to take in these external projects without making it a requirement for everybody (which I know you are not advocating for)

@missingcharacter @Taniwha I wouldn't advocate for it being a requirement, I just think it should be an option. Anything you think is an accurate indicator of the quality of work that you're able to do should count, imo. There is a fine line to avoid in which someone is employed somewhere and contributed nothing to the company but was exemplary elsewhere, but even in those cases often those people end up bringing value to the company anyway. Many CNCF contributors are a popular example of that
@hazelweakly @Taniwha I think we agree here

@missingcharacter @Taniwha ah whoops, I read what you said backwards 😅

We do!

@hazelweakly @Taniwha I wish managers were given the time and resources to evaluate each individual, and that managers wanted to spend the time to review each person as a whole human not just "the bottom line"... but I think this is a different topic
@Taniwha @hazelweakly I was a consultant in a team of 5 where 3 of us were consultants and we weren't allowed to contribute to the performance review so the 2 FTEs basically had one person review them
@Paxxi @Taniwha wow that's terrible. I can't imagine that went well for anyone involved
@hazelweakly @Taniwha I don't really know how it went, nobody was fired but it don't know how it affected their yearly raises
@Paxxi @hazelweakly that’s rough. I hope that their manager fought for them.
