This Water Dragon is a regular on this part of the trail and seemed determined to block my path today, at least momentarily.

There was another smaller look-alike a few more metres down the trail too.

@SeanHawley I don't know why. They always behave that way and don't show any fear.

I think their first instinct is to hope you don't see them. Then they're stuck in that strategy until you get too close.

Also most lizards can not run and breathe at the same time (common muscles). So I imagine that effects the balance between freeze or flee.
