File this under "duh": I need to change my paradigm for #Gentoo. I'm finding the things I want to install either aren't in the repositories or are outdated in the repositories, and if I want to accomplish what I want to accomplish I need to download the source myself and compile it rather than go through portage.
Quite a different experience from #ArchLinux. I was originally bemoaning it, but really I just need to get more familiar with doing it the nitty-gritty way. I think I'll like it in the long run.

@juddium Arch has AUR, gentoo has overlays.

See https://overlays.gentoo.org/ for more information about it.

Gentoo Overlays

@nightdweller yeah I'm aware of both, and I've added several overlays already. The AUR is better maintained in my experience, and has the advantage of a unified platform, although I will admit my experience with portage is not as extensive as with pacman. Still, even with overlays, there are several packages I would like to use that are outdated and unusable.

@juddium Sounds like you have to perfect opportunity/excuse to run your own overlay and write some Ebuild scripts to go with it.

Something that is still on my todo list... 😑 I Will get to it eventually.

@nightdweller I'm such a noob though it will literally take me days to get it sorted out. I keep thinking about it, but...
