Here is another old LRI article, focusing on Washington's name before the name change, but a lesson in historical associations of savage tropes and Anti Indigenous violence encoded in mascotry.

Recognizing #httr chant was racist and written by a billionaire estate who owes reparations to Oceti people, I recognize the tomahawk chop as a hateful gimmick of corporations. Keep this in mind with #dechief and current efforts of #changethename. https://www.patreon.com/posts/jan-15-2014-fil-70387276
The "Trail of Tears" sign is sadly one incident of many where desensitized and sadistic settlers made mockery of genocidal history, showing the intent for a dynamic of domination and harm is intentional. https://www.patreon.com/posts/nov-19-2013-of-70391018
And much like adults involved in "#scalpem" controversy with a other Ntv mascot, there is the tangible proof of interpersonal dynamics highlighting the settler colonial historical biases of prejudice, outright racism, upheld by adults, admin, leadership, which is STRUCTURAL.
Sharing these post to reiterate that these struggles are not insignificant or imagined, as much as mascot enablers and defenders may try to argue. There is legit layers of intergenerational trauma, due to the histories of genocide on the US and none of this occurs in a vacuum.
And that's without getting into the capitalism aspect, the global brands that uphold these mascots to build upon histories of resources extraction, while justifying Ntv invisibility, extinction and attempting to indoctrinate younger generations into the same cycles.
Since I've been doing this work for yrs, there is an accumulation of proof: historical research, political research regarding fed #Ndn policy and Ndn wars and encoded associations, research of brands involved, as well as other sociopolitical aspects, reflection of the dynamics.
I encourage the sharing of my patreon post to limit the amount of labor that Ntvs and Indigenous ppls are forced to put fourth anytime football season rolls around.
Even if u aren't subscribed there's no harm In sending the post so the indiv demanding education can compensate.
