It's not always easy to untangle
@emptywheel 's articles, because she dares to write about things that can't be explained in a headline.

But it's always worth it. Here, she shows how Columbia Journalism Review trusted a claim FROM RUSSIA to form one of its central conclusions about Hillary.

Jeff Gerth's Undisclosed Dissemination of Russian Intelligence Product - emptywheel

Jeff Gerth spends 23,000 words lecturing other journalists they need to be more transparent. But he doesn't reveal that one of the key pieces of evidence in his narrative that Hillary pushed a "conspiracy theory" that "there was a secret alliance" between Trump and Russia was a Russian intelligence product, a product the reliability of which not even spooks managed by John Ratcliffe would authenticate.

Think about that: to show that U.S. press was overly obsessed about Russia, CJR relied on information that we intercepted FROM Russia.

Information which easily could have been Russian disinformation itself.

@thomasafine @emptywheel Brilliant piece, deep dive analysis.
@thomasafine @emptywheel am I mistaken or were the only journalists that would speak to him for the piece were from super right-wing outlets?
@thomasafine @emptywheel too bad there are too many words, dates, and names for the average low-information reader. This is appalling and speaks to rot at the core.
@thomasafine @emptywheel She's wound up too tight, claims she's a potty mouth but can't take lol's. She also used to do work for RT, so always take with a grain of salt. Great posts and analysis for sure, but an absolute asshole when she wants to be, which is very off putting. I removed her from my goto lists on Twitter after one of her attitudes got the best of her, and only after I made a funny reference to one of her tweets and she got upset over it. This business isn't for people who can't take a humorous side to it on occasion. She pushes out a lot of Mueller she wrote stuff by way of saying everyone will be prosecuted etc etc because she has these facts on her side. Well, we all fell for Mueller for years, edge of your seat stuff, and the result was a very lackluster end. You can only push out the "we got them now" narrative for so long before you end up with: been there done that, no trust left that accountability will be had. Just my few pennies on the table...
