I'm kind of tired and worn out, but gosh darn it, I want to talk RPG magic stuff. I recently saw a post asking what you would replace the #DnD schools of magic with if you pulled them from the game.

One of the things I've always liked to think is that the schools of magic are what most "traditional" wizards learn, but maybe there isn't a universal constant reinforcing them as the "true" underlying rules of magic.

My approach would be to work backwards: Establish overal themes, desrired spellcaster roles in combat, and then restructuring the content in a balanced (?) way.

Short of actually changing the magic systems mechanics, of course. That'd be a new game itself.

As for the changes I'd make:

Split them by their plane of influence, by: Elemental, Astral, Etherial, Shadow, Feywild, and Outer (?). All get some a mix of in and out of combat spells, with new themes. /
