Prior to Woodrow Wilson, in 1913, the SOTU had been delivered as a written document. But, Wilson saw the opportunity to use an address to rally support for his positions.
@bobwyman Yes. He also didn’t like the separation of powers and a more powerful president. I think it was LBJ who moved it to prime time.

I dunno. I don't see how an email could have prompted a loud and vocal denial that any Republican wanted to sunset Social Security and Medicare, nor could an email then have gotten all Republicans to stand as a pledge that Social Security and Medicare will remain safe.

There were interactions that would not be visible via email. I thought it was a good speech that showed good spirit.

But I suppose the essence of politics is that opinions differ — that's the point.
