With all of the GPT talk about "the death of writing", can anyone agree with me that we should not care?

Why I Don't Care if Students Use GPT

They can go ahead, use it to cheat on their essay. It won't do them much good. An Experiment Here's a recent experience I've had with ...

Some Words To Not
@hoffman I didn't use the Westworld metaphor (because I've not watched the show!) but this is pretty much exactly how I talked to my first-year writing students about ChatGPT at the beginning of the semester. So you're not alone!
@writerethink That's good to know! It's an uphill battle with students, but I do just want them to just grow and stay sane.
@hoffman very good! nice analogy you found, I will discuss this with my students and other faculty. the plain realization that students are there to, ahem, learn, can be shocking, it's good to step out of the hamster wheel every now and then

@yairmau

It's surprising how hard it is to keep in mind, for both sides of the equation.

@hoffman … great example - and a good article - thank you - and yes, life is all about learning anyhow …

β€œβ€¦You are not trying to solve a differential equation; you are trying to learn….”

@hoffman Really appreciated this piece. I was one of those students who withered under the product-generation orientation of university (I'd write a few A-level essays, then drop the ball of the rest and end up with a poor overall grade). I hope GPT helps schools and universities reorient to prioritize the process of learning, not the end product.
@causerie Thank you! I hope so, too.
