@ml My local native Viola sororia are so pretty, with numerous color and flower form variations... but they're all scentless.
@thebiologistisn I just found myself wondering where the breeders of Parma violets got their breeding stock. Because a lot of violets have no real scent. (Not that I've happened upon any wild ones here.)
@ml They're an old-world species (Viola odorata) that started out strongly scented. The extra petals of the Parma violets means they have even more nectaries than the wild form.

@ml They're a subject I dug into at one point. In the end, I didn't feel like introducing a non-native violet to my yard. I've got three native species with flowers to enjoy.

If I had a greenhouse, I'd definitely have an odorata collection though.

@thebiologistisn I haven't tried it yet, but in CA I'll bet you can get away with growing them as a houseplant, maybe with some babying.

It's actually tough growing them outdoors in Davis due to how hot it gets for so much of the year.
