For a few years now, the word “trigger” in popular use has expanded to include things that would previously been called “squick.” And it’s kind of too bad, and too bad “squick” has remained subcultural, because it’s really useful to distinguish the thing that grosses you out and upsets you a and just makes you want to nope out — from the thing that will (re)traumatize you. Squick is that first thing, in the subcultures where it’s used.
@dys_morphia I've never heard squick before, but I think I want to start using it now. That's a great word!
@dys_morphia OMG I still remember when it first came into usage. JFC I’m old. Also I had REALLY questionable taste in newsgroups as a youth…
@cautionwip @dys_morphia I resemble that remark. I met my husband on one of those "questionable" newsgroups...
@annaraven @dys_morphia Oh hey, I didn’t mean the kink groups. :) Nothing but love and fond memories of mostly everything but the Gorean stuff. For a youngu’un in the 80’s (too young perhaps) it was a great place to learn about doing that stuff safely. I’m thinking more like alt.tasteless.
@dys_morphia Yeah. I always want to make sure Im distinguishing a traumatizing experience from one that merely makes me uncomfortable. "Squick" was a great term for the latter because I could express the scope of my uncomfortable/grossed out reaction but without co-opting a term I should save for Real Serious Problems
