I'm reading this post from ConvertKit about AWS bills in 2022 https://convertkit.engineering/2023/01/31/aws-2022-year-in-review/

it's very accurate, but with a couple of tweaks, I believe they could save a little more without losing performance.

The keys?
- AWS Graviton
- EBS gpt3
- Cassandra on arm64
- OpenSearch on Graviton
- Ruby on arm64

The 2022 ConvertKit AWS bill

1/ Let's start with EC2:

I know they are a Ruby shop.
So: just migrating from x86 to arm64 could help them to save BIG.

This 🧵 on Twitter has a lot of great advice here about running Ruby on Graviton https://twitter.com/nateberkopec/status/1433461218170265613

and there are more tips here https://github.com/aws/aws-graviton-getting-started

There is another great tutorial on how to install Ruby 2.6 on arm64 AWS Graviton https://mistonline.in/wp/how-to-install-ruby-2-6-on-arm64/

Ruby on Graviton2/ARM is probably the most significant cost savings available out there right now. Easy 25-33% compute cost cuts, even more perhaps in CI environments (easier bin-packing of your CI agents onto physical hardware). Worth investigating if it’s possible for your app

2/ Now, more about Ruby especially: there are some performance improvements for arm64: https://www.ruby-lang.org/en/news/2022/12/25/ruby-3-2-0-released/

"YJIT now supports both x86-64 and arm64/aarch64 CPUs on Linux, MacOS, BSD and other UNIX platforms.
This release brings support for Apple M1/M2, AWS Graviton"

4/ Let's talk about EBS now: work with my good friend Cristian Măgherușan-Stanciu to save even more with his tools:
- EBS Optimizer: https://aws.amazon.com/marketplace/pp/prodview-ryzl67mmq3ghk

- AutoSpotting: https://aws.amazon.com/marketplace/pp/prodview-6uj4pruhgmun6

He is a former AWS employee, so he is much better than me at this. :)

AWS Graviton2 offers best Cassandra price-performance

In this blog, we compare the performance and price-performance of running Cassandra on AWS Graviton2 compared to x86-based instances.

Enough, for now, my good friends of ConvertKit.

BTW: I use ConvertKit to write https://awsgravitonweekly.com every single week.
