Preprint servers will never be the same, once disinformation actors really get going using chatGPT. Presumably they'll flood the place on topics like climate change and COVID vaccines.
What will we do - add more peer review? Peer review is in crisis already.
@alexh I think arxiv requires an academic affiliation or an endorsement, and it seems perfectly reasonable to ban people that upload bogus preprints
@goerz @alexh Most arxiv make some basic checks. Especially the medical arxiv are a little more stricter. I don’t think that you need an academic affiliation.
@ecological_fallacy @alexh Well, they probably should. This seems like a relatively easy problem to solve: verify the identity of people who post preprints, and ban them if they consistently abuse the server
@goerz @alexh Is there even a problem here? Is this already happening somewhere on a large scale? As already mentioned, I would assume that these basic checks are already sufficient. At MedRxiv I already had problems to publish and that only because the basic checks were not negotiable.
@alexh @Ruth_Mottram pedigree has become more important still -- not every scientist is world-leading, not every paper seminal, not every journal prestigious
@richardtol @alexh That's a depressing but I fear accurate conclusion...
