@bhaggs @alabut @mastohost @omgdotlol Yup given all the things designers in tech pay $10/month for - a fast host + community + communication tool seems like a good value. If you can get 250-300 designers to pre-commit seems worth trying.
@bhaggs @alabut @mastohost @omgdotlol also now i'm realizing any design-oriented company should be sponsoring a server - figma, framer, etc...

@benblumenrose @bhaggs @mastohost @omgdotlol you nailed why I’m only noodling on starting a paid community instance and haven’t committed yet, even though the need seems obvious. An org with devs, moderators and existing community like Figma should be able to do a better job than a solo entrepreneurial designer type like me. Or even service providers - how long until AWS or Digital Ocean jump in?

Also because it’s more expensive to do than people realize. It’s cheap to get started but the nature of decentralized servers means all it takes is one viral post or @gruber fireballing a link to bring everything to a halt on the origin server unless you spend a gajillion.

Might be a fertile area for innovation by devs or sysadmins. I’m curious to see if Mastodon and Fediverse has enough momentum now to get entrepreneurial juices flowing, like the way blogging stimulated Flickr and Media Temple back in the day.

@benblumenrose @bhaggs and here we go, barely three days later and a big player jumps into the game. Things are moving fast.

Welcome to Wildebeest: the Fediverse on Cloudflare

Today we're announcing Wildebeest, an open-source, easy-to-deploy ActivityPub and Mastodon-compatible server built entirely on top of Cloudflare's Supercloud.

@alabut @bhaggs oh nice - ya trust them to maintain it :)

@benblumenrose @bhaggs well let’s give them a minute and see how it shakes out 😂

I mean even they’re being a little cautious about how fast things are going:

“We didn't want to run a managed service for Mastodon as it would somewhat diminish the concepts of federation and data ownership. Also, we recognize that ActivityPub and Mastodon are emerging, fast-paced technologies that will evolve quickly and in ways that are difficult to predict just yet.”
