Have you heard about this wonderful 9-year-old citizen #scientist who serviced the world by not only stomping out invasive, dangerous #lanternflies but also collecting samples for research?

~ Neighbors called the cops on her ~

...complaining of a "little Black woman, walking and spraying stuff on the sidewalks and trees”

Well, happy ending-- Bobbi was later recognized by Yale for her efforts (see image below) 🎉

Of the incident, her mother said, "“I wanted it to be a teachable moment. This same call could’ve happened in another state with another police officer, and I would be grieving.”

Someone Called the Police on a Girl Catching Lanternflies. Then Yale Honored Her.

Bobbi Wilson, 9, was hunting for spotted lanternflies, an invasive species, in New Jersey. A neighbor called the police, but her effort has since earned recognition “from far and wide,” her mother said.

This young lady was doing what her own state's Department of Agriculture told people to do.

She joined the 'battle' to stop the spread of the spotted lanternfly, which poses serious risks to agriculture and the overall ecosystem.

@dalfen Just FYI, The NYT link is behind a pay wall.
@dalfen Now this is one heck of an amazing snooks! Her parents must be beaming with pride! Way to go kiddo!

Yale honors the work of a 9-year-old Black girl whose neighbor reported her to police (https://www.npr.org/2023/02/03/1154049233/yale-honors-9-year-old-black-girl-neighbor-reported-police-lanternfly) image https://media.npr.org/assets/img/2023/02/02/bobbi-wilson_wide-3fd4da26cc47cfaf439894537424dcb1a8839593.jpg Bobbi Wilson went on a mission to save New Jersey's trees, capturing spotted lanternflies. That frightened her neighbor, who called the cops. Now, her bug collection is part of a Yale museum. #news #npr #publicradio #usa posted by pod_feeder_v2 (https://gitlab.com/brianodonnell/pod_feeder_v2/)

@dalfen There’s no happy ending…this wonderful girl has been traumatized. I am glad that important people are trying to help her and show how much she matters. But unfortunately ugly words and actions will never be forgotten!
@dooordah
That's a great point 😔
Hopefully there will be lots of good to come out of this overall, but it's horrible for that young girl 😢
@dalfen It is a happy ending that she is getting some great positive attention. However, that moment when she realized a neighbor called the cops on her will probably be a trauma point forever.
@dalfen "little black woman," I guess they had to employ that phrase so none of the parties involved in the police call would have to confront the fact that they were endangering the life of a little girl. Going out of their way to imply she was an adult, because they already know, mid-phonecall, that they're garbage people who are calling the cops on a *child.*

@trashcaster I was wondering about that when I had just heard the story from someone else but hadn’t yet seen her pic— why would they say that? Did she look like a young woman?

But in that pic, she clearly looks like a child.

Freaking disgusting.

@dalfen It is, and it's so common. Racists refuse to acknowledge the youth or innocence of black children because as far as they're concerned these kids don't deserve that perception.
@trashcaster @dalfen We are fighting this in U.K. with disgusting race hate language from the Home Secretary . There have been articles in gutter press implying children are really young men in small boats. They also pretend asylum seekers are ‘illegal’ as well even though they have rights in international law.

@stroppypanda @trashcaster

So awful, I'm sorry to read that 😔

It's not uncommon here (especially here in the South, although this incident happened in the Northeast) for us to say "young lady" to respectfully refer to a child in a positive way. But when I first heard that the person told the police it was a "little... woman," I couldn't understand why they would say that of a 9-year-old. (Well, obviously it had to do with her race, since they added "Black").

Now it makes sense, unfortunately 😔 💔

@dalfen @trashcaster I cannot believe that we had politicians denying that people were children and suggesting that they needed their teeth examined . It is horrific. In fact a Holocaust survivor spoke up be fore our atrocious Home Secretary and the diabolical woman refused to apologise for her language.
@stroppypanda @trashcaster Oh my goodness… that’s horrible 😳
@dalfen @trashcaster It was so strange. Despite the intervention the audience clapped the Home Secretary since then they’ve tried to cover up the interview. The reason this matters is everyday they normalise hate speech it is absorbed by others. Right down to provision of services for asylum seekers . They deserve to be treated properly .
@dalfen
That's awesome. I bet her family is so proud of her.
@dalfen Yes. A budding entomologist or a pesticide expert. Good for her. Let us thank the neighbor who called the law on her. 🤣🤣🤣

@dalfen Did not know that. Thank you.
@dalfen - "Little Black woman" so it doesn't sound like they're having a young girl!
@dalfen Oh, I’m so glad this story has a happy ending! I heard about it a couple days after the initial incident and I was so mad
@dalfen both wonderful & terrifying. What is this world becoming where kids can’t be kids & the colour of your skin puts you in danger. 😔
@dalfen Wow! Just looked these up. I don’t think we have them in UK yet thankfully. Good for your daughter - well done
@organicbotanic Oh that’s not my daughter. It’s a young girl I read about.
