A closer look at Orion

I‘m blown away by the details of this photo that I took yesterday from our terrace. It shows the Horse Head Nebula as well as the Great Orion Nebula and a ton of stars from the Orion constellation.

I took 180 light frames at 200mm using ISO 1000 at f3.5 for 15 seconds each on the Canon EOS R with Canon EF 70-200 f2.8L IS USM II. Then I stacked and processed them using Siril.

I‘m just getting back into astro photography and this is the best photo so far. Our garden is looking south and the house blocks view on Polaris and the North Celestial Pole so I could only roughly dial in the Star Adventurer.
I also had to deal with a super bright moon as today, just one day later, is full moon.

I did it again! This time using a 2x extender to get the focal length up to 400mm.

I’m actually relieved that it looks impressive again. So it was not just pure luck on the weekend 🙂

The photo shows the Running Man Nebula on top and the Orion Nebula beneath.

@benchr very impressive! Did I get that right that you’re using some sort of star follow device? Unfortunately I only have a MFT camera. They suck at low light 😅

Also: this was in the city?? You should go somewhere in Sachsen-Anhalt or Mecklenburg according to https://da-oben.de/lichtverschmutzung/

@leberwurstsaft thank you! Yes, I’m using a SkyWatcher Star Adventurer that I bought used in 2020 after Neowise.

MFT is worse at low light but it also increases focal length. So maybe not that bad with the right telescope and a lot of time 🙂

It is in the city! We live in Köpenick now. Still bright (Bortle 6) but manageable.

I was in Sternenpark Havelland (almost S-A) to shoot the Milky Way in summer 2020. 🙂

@benchr 🤩 what stacking software did you use? (never mind, I just read it again)
@brunoph multiple but ended up with Siril. Very complex UI but extremely capable 🙂
@benchr looks stunning, thanks for sharing 😍
