Mastodon.art suspended me for interacting with people from blocked instances however I won't just go around and block every instance in their own blocklist when I haven't seen any issues from these instances myself.

Let me be clear, I will block anything that I find or gets reported to me that contains racism, homophobia, extremism, pedophilia, harassment and anything of the sort. But I just won't import a blocklist that I do not approve myself.

This whole notion does not make sense for single user instances. Especially with the fact that even if I interact with someone from a blocked instance the other server will not receive the blocked instance post, only mine.

I do find it sad that many people are pushing for more small instances but when you manage one you get blocked for not moderating OTHER instances?

This will only push users into signing up to bigger instances and discourage people to host their own

Also the fact that I interact with you does not mean my instance receives every post from yours lmao

@feinzer That's why I strongly advise artists no to go to mastodon.art, because their art is not going to be seen on a lot of other instances including the biggest one mastodon.social, which m.art limited.

I guess this behavior is also why they've been removed from joinmastodon's server list.

@feinzer I mean at this rate they'd better defederate and as usual it's all hypocrisy since they limited mastodon.social instead of suspending it. Because yeah social is also 'federating with the usual suspects'

@Mia I mean you could argue about harassment and what not. I personally do not see the hashtag as something I depend on so I wouldn't block you for joking around it

But some wanted the hashtag to be a sort of warning channel for issues like mass harassment, racism, homophobia and stuff. But as always, some just weaponized it against people they didn't like and it turned into a complete mess lol

@feinzer #fediblock has always been a tool for causing pain across fedi. fedi was designed for federation, using central blocks lists or things like #fediblock goes directly against this, exactly why again one should manage their own instance and blocklist

@Mia I mostly agree but a better use for fediblock imo was as public report / warning channel for issues that happen instance wide. (Which is not uncommon to have a group of people attack another for whatever stupid or awful reason)

Everyone would need to check these issues for themselves and decide if they want to block or not. But people are lazy and would rather just block right away, giving others a way to weaponize it because having your name on it meant getting blocked without question.

@dangerdyke i replied to a post about an instance they blocked citing harassment and racism.

The instance was 30 hours or so old. Literally just created with 3 or 4 users and they never received any reports. They just blocked them and publicly called them out on the fediblock hashtag for no reason

They are doing some kind of automation for this and even then doing it wrong

I fully support your point!

I actually think that due to the block culture we currently have in the fediverse, we are worse than Twitter from a social point of view. Blocking everyone who does not have the same political view or just opinion about something is noting than just building echo Chambers. Everything we say and do is right because everyone who could say otherwise is or will be blocked.

And that instances which does not block other instances are getting blocked is getting quiet common here. Just makes me speechless and sad..

That's a point to set up your own instance. Indeed, why follow the rules of someone you even don't know? Only because this person gathered some people on a private server?
It's only you and the people you would like to interact with. Don't let any 3rd party rule this interaction.

@mikoto yeah, I meant mostly blocklists. Because I wouldn't really care about being blocked by .art at all if not for people who take their blocklist for their own instance without checking it

One admin I know used to do that and based their list on .art's. They decided to revisit their list and check if they actually deserved to be blocked and that's awesome.
