masto.nyc is now large enough that I observe the following:

* The "Local" tab is getting peppy and fun!

* The "Federated" tab is surprisingly readable, almost entirely in English, and usually non-horrible. Having fun dipping in now and again!

* The "Trending" tab is dominated by anger/disgust/bad news/tales of woe. Turns out you don't need algorithmic manipulation to make "engagement"-driving posts to float to the top. We humans just gotta share our bad vibes, I fear. Can't get enough of it.

To clarify: I call out the mostly-in-English nature of this server's Federated tab as an interesting side effect of its regional specificity, compared to the joyful polyglottal soup one sees on the Federated tab of mastodon.social et al.

I didn't mean to imply that more people should write in English dagnabbit. Post how you post! 🙏

@jmac If you go to Preferences>Other under "public timelines" you get a "filter languages" section: "When checked, only posts in selected languages will be displayed in public timelines"

I don't mind other languages at all, but I was having to scroll past long chains of posts I had no chance of comprehending before I filtered myself to preferred languages.

@HanonO Heh… I think I don’t trust computers to know what language done text is in, though!
@jmac I assume it's filtering by what the *poster* indicates is their language.
