This is pretty amazing to be honest.

Yesterday I put up a poll asking 1000 people to sign this petition demanding undocumented immigrants have the right to get a Driver's License.

296 people took the poll and 400 people also signed the petition. Everyone did what they said they would! How great is that! 😀

We're ~600 people shy of my goal. Will you be 1 of 600 and speak up for undocumented immigrants? Much love ❤️✊🏽

All 50 states should allow driver’s licenses for undocumented persons

@QasimRashid Is this a state by state thing or calling for a federal action?
@rosanita Calling for activism in all 50 states as DL's are by nature a state document.
Massachusetts voters keep new immigrant driver’s license law

“Yes” votes won out in the closely watched Massachusetts Ballot Question 4.

@QasimRashid California has them already, I think.

@QasimRashid

I was volunteering at our local immigrant center where we helped undocumented folks get licenses on 9/11/01.

Those people losing that right is so far from anything that would make any of us safer. 💔🤬

@QasimRashid just think, George Santos has some form of NYS Identification.
@QasimRashid this is great. 16 states already do this but the other 34 need to get onboard. Someone's immigration status should be immaterial to whether they can buy auto insurance and drive safely.

@captainsmartass @QasimRashid This reads like it came from an insurance company. Hahaha..Bring me the money.
@captainsmartass @QasimRashid I’m on the fence b/c 1st of all, #fuckCars. It’s wrong to take action to promote more cars on the road. But given that revolting lousy design of cities to require cars, immigration status is immaterial. Surely the “safer roads” claim is unsubstantiated. Bicycles make roads safer than cars. /cc @sadtaco @nihilistic_capybara
@nihilistic_capybara @sadtaco @QasimRashid @captainsmartass So my question is: how many undocumented people are driving illegally & how many travel legally (cycling/taxi)? Stats show that undocumented immigrants commit crime at ½ the rate of US citizens, which is obvious. When you are in a country illegally the last thing you want is to get caught doing something unlawful that will get you deported. So how many are really taking that risk?

@QasimRashid: I didn't sign a petition, I voted for a ballot question to allow it. The proposal carried and here in Massachusetts you don't have to be here legally to get a driver's license.

It was simple common sense.

@QasimRashid We have something like this in MA already. Seems pretty straightforward and sensible.
@QasimRashid They drive anyway, we might as well know that they know the rules and have insurance.

@QasimRashid
It is a good thing for people to be able to earn a driver's license by taking Driver's Education as that makes it safer on the road.
Having the additional requirement of having car insurance also helps everyone...

The only difficulty is that a Driver's License is used for registration to vote in some areas and only legal citizens should by law vote.

The Real ID does not serve everyone as older folks from small towns in the U.S. with non standard birth certificates are unable to get Real IDs without assistance.

@QasimRashid
It would be good to come up with a permanent National voting ID card for all adult citizens that is free, gets easily and regularly updated, that can be altered for free if there is a name change and that can be replaced for free if lost or stolen.

In California we have the AB 60 DL which allows undocumented individuals to drive but does not allow them to vote. It is, in my view, a good stop gap solution but a National voter's ID card for U.S. Citizens who are eligible to vote would, in my view, be a good thing to push in addition to Driver's Licenses for those without documentation.
(I would like to do away with the poll taxes in effect in some States and with those laws which harm our Representative Democratic Constitutional Republic by trying to reduce voting by U.S. citizens.)

@QasimRashid
Wait what is the benefit of having undocumented ppl get a DL?
