A view of Lānaʻi from Maui.
The ʻAuʻau Channel, between the two islands is one of the most protected areas of ocean in the Hawaiian Islands. Its shallow depth only reaches 108 feet (33 m). Humpback whales migrate from Alaska and spend the winter months in its abundant waters. The annual 9.6-mile Maui Channel Swim takes place here.
Auʻau translates to "to take a bath" referring to its calm bath-like conditions.
