Death by missing data: Uncollected racial and ethnic pandemic data will drive inequities for decades to come

Missing data on race and ethnicity has been an issue throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. How bad has the problem been? Far beyond bad.

STAT
@jessiet From a European perspective, we're not (only) missing race and ethnicity data. We're primarily missing data on migration status, legal status, country of birth, primary language, etc. - alongside SES and occupation. Those things are often more useful than race/ethnicity to explain differential exposures, risks and #HealthInequities.
@NoraGottlieb YES! We're working on evaluating the data we collect in NC to understand how complete/reliable it is for 7 variables across ~15 key data sets. (race, ethnicity, preferred language, disability status, sexual orientation, gender identity, sex assigned at birth)
TBH I'd be nervous to collect immigration status- wouldn't want that info to be used inappropriately. (would be hard to collect for the same reason!)

@jessiet Sounds great.
Do you collect info on country of origin? Or would you feel like that'd be problematic, too?

We're in the process of wrapping up a syst. review on Covid-19 and migration... - in which we had to exclude most studies from USA, UK, AUS because they were using only race/ethnicity. It was quite 💔 not to be able to use all that evidence.

@NoraGottlieb we don't :(
