I wish I could tell you. My best guess is that the information age, cable tv and social media are to blame, plus human weakness.
I see years of Fox media has misshapen GOP thought. So much so that conservatives didn't recognize more targeted Russian manipulation via social media that turned hyper-political into fascism.
At the beginning of it all I'm sure GOP politicians saw the Fox manipulation, but didn't call it out because it benefitted them.
Just my amateur thought.
