@paulisci I notice only one if these considers history to be a basic.

It's almost like all these "back to basics" types think you can teach reading and writing without anything to read or write about.

@paulisci It shows my age, but the earliest moral panic for this I remember was teaching in Black vernacular English (then called "Ebonics").
@paulisci It is telling that these folks focus on arithmetic and bristle at the idea of learning mathematics. Knowing how to add and multiply without exploring the implications lead to shallow understanding and short term retention. Independent thinking and complex ideas are the enemy.
