I live on a rural road but found out in Sept 2022 fiber internet was plumbed to a network box two houses away from me. I asked a technician working if I could get fiber at home from it, he said he'd put in the request.

I've called the company every month since begging them to install it. Today I got a call from a special projects guy there responding to a Sept request and I could likely get fiber this week, 10x the speed at 1/2 the cost I currently pay.

Navigating company org charts is hard.

@mathowie How much research did you do in to how much work it would be to trench and lay cable yourself? You know you at least *considered* whether it was feasible.

@andrew oh man, one call lead me to sign up as a community leader to try and recruit all my neighbors into building a LLC to cover the construction costs.

But in the end, they were like "oh yeah, you have telephone poles all the way up to your house, we can just string fiber on that"

@mathowie @andrew It’s so funny — fiber on poles was the LAST thing companies were willing to do about 5-7 years ago, they just wanted to trench it or nothing, and that’s what caused DC to be so late to the fiber game. Finally FIOS was like “yeah, these poles — why don’t we just run it up there?” and it was MAGICAL.
