I have spent a good portion of my day doing the type of work I expect to be done in the workplace and yet, I never had time to do at my own home: Documentation.

Today I have been using a circuit tracer a walkie-talkie and my 11y/o son to start mapping out each and every circuit back to the breaker panel to have a detailed circuit panel schedule print-out.

We completed about 30% of it today over about 3 hours. So, I have about 7+ more hours of work to do, but it should be done and feels good to get done.

Essentially, I am doing what I have done in each and every network distribution facility at work. Document every pathway so I can know with extremely high confidence if I ever need to work on something.

@jtt Nice! What's your circuit tracer of choice?
@mikeymikey I'm using this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08VWCSG7G?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details It has aligator clips and edison bulb adapters which is super helpful since you don't always have a proper outlet.

@jtt I've done this more than once with our house sans tracer (because sans tracer 😄) but I still get surprised because of the absolutely insane way our house is wired.
@callmeray I live in a 100+ y/o home. I was surprised at how illogical some of the circuits are… then I thought about working around 100yo bones and thought “yeah, that seems right” while still shaking my head.
