For the past 6 years, each of my managers at work was confused about why I was so stressed out about being on a US work visa. "What's the worst that could happen?"

Well, this Twitter thread is a terrifying example. Laid off while on a work visa but outside the US? Oops, can't come back.

@psobot I’m always amazed by the lack of understanding the average born American has about immigration. And as I often point out, I’m from Canada! My worst cases are like still the best! Also how much do you not miss traveling on a visa?!
@paulosman I certainly don’t blame Americans for not being familiar with the details of a policy they’ll never have to interact with; but the concept of having residency tied to employment is definitely hard to understand unless you’ve lived it. Hell, I thought I knew what trade off I was making when I moved here, but the stress really snuck up on me.
