sincerely don't understand how people can stand not to have pet ants.

They are so cute and small. They have such complex social interactions and surprise me every day.

How can you resist??

@futurebird I always wanted an ant farm as a child. Maybe now is the time to make my dreams a reality. Maybe I can use an old piece of double glazing.
@futurebird The only pet ants those people have are intolerANTs. 😔

@futurebird I love reading your ant posts. I've been drawn to them since I was a small child.

My ex-wife was an entomologist and they were the only insect she didn't much like, which I thought was a real shame. She said it was bc they're mean and bite, but I think their complex social nature freaked her out.

(She didn't feel as strongly abt bees, but they never interested her much either).

@futurebird you're a goddess in your own right

@futurebird I fully agree, and also would Never have insect pets if I had roommates/regular guests unless they were under lock and key.

Because when I was a kid I was raising mealworms and made the mistake of putting their feeding cup holding them and their food on the bed, thinking no one would bother them in my room and I would be back soon enough.

Cue my mother deciding to be "helpful" and make my bed without looking first. We were hunting down mealworms/beetles for weeks.

@futurebird some of us have pet ants whether or not we wanted pet ants.
@futurebird I've got free range pet ants in our apartment building. When something becomes an issue you associate them with bad things. Like people with allergies to cats have an emotional negative reaction to cats and while they don't hate them should be viewed from a distance or vicariously.
@futurebird
I used to love having an ant farm. Red ants were good for that. Their sting hurt pretty bad, but they weren't too aggressive. You could catch them by getting them to climb up a straw. A Mason Jar worked. It was fun to watch them work.
But one day I was barefoot & jumped on a gopher mound only to discover that it was actually a fire ant mound. After that, they were everywhere and they would find you if you didn't keep moving.
After that I never thought of having an ant farm again.
