@Alternatecelt Thanks for that one Angela - I had family in Stranraer and remember playing near the monument as a kid without knowing the full story of what it was about until I grew up
@kfcspike
This is how we keep these memories alive! Thank you for the boost!
@Alternatecelt Have you ever seen the wreck of the Craigantlet at Killantringan? It is quite an experience to sit by the lighthouse and watch the falling tide slowly uncover it.
@DarkGalloway
No I haven't. Will have to check that out! It's north of Portpatrick isn't it?
@Alternatecelt That's right. Up the coast road and the lighthouse is signposted. Take the road over the fields and you come to a small parking space (which seems to be increasingly filling up with camper vans in the summer). There's a wee cove to the left of the lighthouse and it's down there. Wrecked in the 80s I think. Killantringan beach is lovely at low tide and there's a very nice double waterfall near the car park.
@DarkGalloway @Alternatecelt Can you you drive all the way to the lighthouse or do you stop at the parking place on the bend? Thanks
@kelpie @Alternatecelt Yes, the road goes all the way up to the lighthouse gate. Although I can't remember if there is anywhere suitable to park.
@Alternatecelt Excellently done and, of course, very timely. My father (who passed recently) never failed to mention this tragedy every year. He was 17 and in his first year in Belfast when this occurred and it coloured his memories of the time vividly.
@crypticinquiry
Thank you 🙏
I can imagine it would. Such a tragedy.
