Ozone layer recovery is on track, helping avoid global warming by 0.5°C

NAIROBI, 9 January 2023 – The ozone layer is on track to recover within four decades, with the global phaseout of ozone-depleting chemicals already benefitting efforts to mitigate climate change. This is the conclusion of a UN-backed panel of experts, presented today at the American Meteorological Society’s 103rd annual meeting. Examining novel technologies such as geoengineering for the first time, the panel warns of unintended impacts on the ozone layer.

@pschiller Collective action against shared problems works! Who would have thought.
@SamTheGeek @pschiller that’s true, but the reason the Montreal Protocol worked is partly that ozone depletion was more likely to give skin cancer to a) people in the northern hemisphere, and b) people with lighter skin - so rich European countries and the US were more willing to take action. Meanwhile climate change is more likely to affect people closer to the equator who are more likely to be non-white and poor. 😟
@pschiller this is by no means a sign to slow progress. Let’s keep reducing emissions worldwide.
@pschiller It’s great to see the positive impact we can make. It helps to see that we can swing back toward the other direction!
@pschiller Ozone is a great example of a long-term project to improve the world that worked, and that most people don’t know about, because it started decades ago.
@pschiller Looking forward to 2040 :)
@pschiller this is fantastic news. Do you believe this is more sustainable moving forward than ever?
