By immediately notifying the authorities, returning the documents, and inviting further searches, they create a political problem for Trump: Highlighting the contrast between the right and the wrong way to treat the discovery of classified documents. Trump’s indictment for obstruction now seems inevitable.

Then: Pence, too, avoids obstructing justice …

@JamesGleick But the NYT is structurally incapable of doing that. Their commitment to "both sides" means that they must find the Democrats and the Republicans guilty of an equal number of offenses. The more extreme GOP crimes become, the more Dem crimes must be found to even things up and demonstrate their "fairness".
