@patrascan @jur0_o The Fatal Shore is not history, it is fiction! Badly written, unresearched. Completely trashed by every historian who has looked at it.
@jur0_o Wiki article gives further information. Author (himself an Aussie) wrote this as non fiction, a historical account. NYT and other critics gave favorable reviews. Read a sample and judge for yourself.

@jur0_o Have you read Leviathan by John Birmingham? It is Sydney specific, but looks at a lot of stuff that people do not think of, that definitely shaped the town
