#SundanceFilmFestival at Home thread:
Starting with #MagazineDreams!
#MagazineDreams: INCREDIBLE performance by Jonathan Majors who is about to have an amazing year of acting in 2023. He’s absolutely mesmerizing and heartbreaking as Killian Maddox. The last 30/40 minutes of the film had me gritting my teeth from sheer stress. What a film.
Next up: #Shortcomings directed by Randall Park! #SundanceFilmFestival
#Shortcomings: loved this one. Randall Park does a great job behind the camera. Standout performances from Justin H. Min and Sherry Cola as Ben & Alice. A movie about how you can only fight change for so long that resonates. Lots of great comedic moments in it. Very much dug it!
Next up: #KimsVideo in the NEXT programming!
#KimsVideo: a very fun, solid experimental documentary on one former card carrying member of old NYC staple “Mr. Kim’s” tries to get to the bottom of what happened to his 55,000 movie collection. It takes him to Italy, to Korea, and some help from the movie gods to find them!
And now: #FairPlay with @ArisDawdle before he jets off to Utah to go in person to #SundanceFilmFestival!
#FairPlay: holy fuck, Chloe Domont arrives with a masterful movie about power dynamics/gender dynamics. Extremely engaging performances from Phoebe Dynevor and Alden Ehrenreich. If you at all dig the TV show Industry, this movie will absolutely be your jam. Last act RULES.

Last movie of the night is

Nam June Paik: Moon Is the Oldest TV - winding down the evening with a Documentary! #Sundance2023

#NamJunePaik - #MoonIstheOldestTV: this was a very good doc by Amanda Kim (her directorial debut) that taught my a lot about the father of video art…a world I didn’t know too much about it. ‘Newness is truthness. Newness is beauty.’ Incredible archival footage of Nam June’s art!
Aliens Abducted My Parents and Now I Feel Kinda Left Out: really cute family movie about hunting for answers with some lovely performances by Emma Tremblay and Jacob Buster. Also loved seeing Will Forte and Elizabeth Mitchell in there too! #Sundance2023
Next up at #Sundance2023 is:
Onyx The Fortuitous And The Talisman Of Souls. This is a part of the Midnight selection aka some good ole horror. Excited to watch this one!

#OnyxTheFortuitous& The Talisman of Souls: @andrewbowser has made a love letter to 80s horror comedy w/ some truly great practical effects, fun jokes, & solid gags. Love to see Jeffrey Combs & @barbaracrampton!
What is Farrah planning?!
I dunno!

(I ❤️’d the Animated credits!)

Now up: watching #CatPerson at #SundanceFilmFestival
#CatPerson: inspired by the New Yorker fiction article, I really enjoyed watching Emilia Jones and Nicholas Braun in this. Explores the gray areas of dating to an extreme degree but def found it entertaining. Also, some really great needledrops too. #Sundance2023
Next up: watching a documentary #TheDisappearanceOfShereHite #Sundance2023
#TheDisappearanceOfShereHite: a very enlightening documentary that keeps alive the findings and words of Shere Hite. Feels like a very important doc in preserving the studies on female sexuality. Dakota Johnson does the voice over throughout of the writings of Shere Hite!
Probably only have 1 or 2 in me tonight so let’s do some horror, from the midnight section of the #Sundance2023 festival — #RunRabbitRun!
#RunRabbitRun: love me some Sarah Snook & she’s really fantastic in this movie about a mother/daughter relationship that starts to get fraught once a rabbit appears on their doorstep. With the arrival of this animal, comes the dredging up of the mom’s past in this tense film.
First up today is: #Mutt at #Sundance2023
#Mutt: Vuk Lungulov-Klotz’s directorial debut follows Feña over one day in NYC as his past starts to show up. A great movie that explores a trans man reconnecting with his sibling, his father, & past relationship all with varying degrees of ease.
Lio Mehiel is sensational!
Now watching: Daisy Ridley in #SometimesIThinkAboutDying at #Sundance2023
#SometimesIThinkAboutDying: always great when a movie includes @megstalter! Marcia DeBonis steals the movie as Carol with a great monologue towards the end. Dave Merheje is fantastic too as is Daisy Ridley! A story about a lonely person standing in their own way…
#AllDirtRoadsTasteOfSalt: Debut feature from Raven Jackson showing Mississippi life over 4 (?) decades. Non-linear & very pensive but it’s worth your patience. Really beautiful imagery & wonderful understated performances, short on dialog but loved the emphasis on touch imagery!
#BadBehaviour: Jennifer Connelly plays Lucy, a women seeking enlightenment from Ben Wishaw’s guru. She checks in with her stunt person daughter Dylan, played by writer/director Alice Englert. Surprising moments, great performances, lots of fun watching this one! Beautiful ending!
Now watching some documentaries:
#AUM: The Cult At The End of the World #Sundance2023
#AUM: #TheCultAtTheEndOfTheWorld -
About the sarin attack in 1995 on the Tokyo subway system. Didn’t know much about this cult or the attack they orchestrated so it was a pretty interesting documentary.
Up first today at #Sundance2023 is a documentary: #IronButterflies
#IronButterflies: powerful & important documentary on the Russian BUK that took down the civilian Malaysian flight MH17. Incredible use of visual imagery & sound to show flight patterns, tons of footage from the wreck, & tracing it all to the current war in Ukraine.
A must see!
Next up, another documentary — excited to watch this one! #KokomoCity at #SundanceFilmFestival
#KokomoCity: tremendous documentary from D. Smith featuring black trans women talking honestly about sex work, about being trans, about the communities that accept them & also conversations with black men. It’s got a wonderful look, black & white imagery w/ great music. #Sundance
