Today is a sad day JetNet bought ADSBExchange. The data source for ElonJet/bots not to worry as other networks will be coming up. If you feed ADSBexchange we encourage you to stop feeding. ADSBExchange was founded on the principles of hobbyists community not for profit PE firms. https://www.jetnet.com/news/jetnet-acquires-ads-b-exchange.html

Know More

I was aware of this in the making but couldn’t share. It was sold for somewhere near 20 million. Dan the owner sold out without really telling anyone, or asking.

@elonjet Much as it sucks, I'm not sure I would hold out for very long when 20 million is thrown around.

Whatever people end up moving too I do hope due diligence on ownership is done.

@pieceofthepie @elonjet the beauty of open source is that we don’t have to put a lot of faith into any organization or leader. If the community is unhappy, some new prospective maintainers fork the original repository and the the community moves on.

@halikular @elonjet In this case though I think the strength of the platform lies in the volunteer submitted data?

I wonder if ActivityPub would lend itself to these kind of things.

@pieceofthepie @elonjet I’m not sure what netjet is supposed to gain when a sizable chunk of the community will leave. Activitypub is volunteer developed, maintained, and hosted, but I’m not sure what their leadership looks like, and I’m not worried either as it’s all a FOSS protocol.
@halikular @pieceofthepie @elonjet Netjet gains a favour owed by Space Karen. (Or more likely, Space Karen paid them up front to do this, I’m guessing none of those guys trust any of their “friends” enough to repay favours. Cash up front is the only way to do it, as Twitter creditors have found out…)
@bigiain @pieceofthepie @elonjet In a week there’s an alternative community database, so that doesn’t even make sense. Only way Elon could get his way is by lobbying the faa to not mandate transponders or similarly.
