“The single greatest lesson the garden teaches is that our relationship to the planet need not be zero-sum, and that as long as the sun still shines and people still can plan and plant, think and do, we can, if we bother to try, find ways to provide for ourselves without diminishing the world. ”

@Bearhouse Michael Pollan must have been rich enough to own land to grow stuff and to have the time to sow, tend, harvest and process crops. Veg growing is HARD WORK and if you have to do a normal job, you'll be lucky to have time to grow more than tomatoes and lettuce, never mind the room you'll need to do it. So let's stop with the happy clappy stuff and get real eh?

@Judeet88

I'm far from rich, but I own land and grow my own food as do many millions of people world wide. I do 'get real' every day when I work on the land. Every meal you eat comes as a result of someone working on land somewhere, you need to think about that before making such ridiculous statements.

@Bearhouse I've been a gardener for 46 yrs and I know just how difficult it is, so stop with the assumptions and accusations of me making "ridiculous statements".
@Judeet88 Well if you make ridiculous statements you need to prepared that others will see them as such. I work hard for the life I lead and don't like being told to 'get real'. Growing food is important and those of us that do it are very well aware of reality, thank you!
@Bearhouse Well bully for you...the vast majority of people have to live in urban areas, mostly in flats, without even a balcony. So happy clappy stuff about "growing food" is utterly meaningless to them and only serves to highlight their plight. Surely you can see that? Only the relatively rich can afford to go to a place where they can afford to do what they want...and they want to preach to others??? Wow!
