It isn't that difficult, CDN type sharing plugins have had Mastodon for years.

Joe Hayashi@dangillmor @verge I’ve got say that I’ve heard a bunch of unsophisticated takes on the VergeCast about mastodon. Surprised that they have been so slow on what is probably the most interesting development in social software in years.
