It is in response to a petition to ban LGBT+ content from education, which has reached nearly 180,000 signature in the meantime in a very cynical attempt by an ideological group of people to send us back to the dark ages.

The govt needs to respond to that petition and what better, quicker and easier response than to be able to say: we hear you, but we also heard the hundreds of thousands who want te opposite, so thank you but no.
