The increased oversight by conservative extremists of what books librarians can order for school libraries (i.e. cracking down on materials about gender, sexuality, race, and racism) is genuine Nazi behavior. https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2023/01/22/students-want-new-books-thanks-restrictions-librarians-cant-buy-them/
Students want new books. Thanks to restrictions, librarians can’t buy them.

Conversations with 37 school librarians across 21 states suggest a thicket of red tape is impairing their ability to buy books.

The Washington Post

@kottke This is an absolutely heartbreaking story.

"On her desk, the librarian keeps three pages of paper that students have covered with the scrawled titles they’d like to read, if only she could order them."

@kottke If anyone was looking for a good illustration of what “Tyranny of the Majority” looks like in practice, this is pretty spot on.
@kottke ah yes, America, the land of the free.

@kottke These conservative nutjobs need to read a couple of books about the 1930s in Germany. 🙄☝️

@kottke @siracusa GOP supports the constitutional right to free speech - unless they disagree with it
@kottke they are after all, many of them, genuine nazis of a sort.
@kottke Last night on German TV I watched a documentary of the NSDAP takeover of the country in 1933, based on the diaries of normal people on both sides: Nurses, doctors, workers, journalists, trade unionists, embassy workers and more. There are differences, but the strategy parallels and the accelerating drip-drip-drip of how resistance is worn away, those are truly terrifying.
