When games that are live service, or rely heavily on servers get cut off, they should at the very least release the server code so others can continue hosting it.

Stop being afraid of open source and embrace it. Too many games will be lost to greed.

Duelyst is a wonderful recent example of how to do it right.

Imagine instead of the complete brutal removal from stores and shutdown that Epic Games are doing with Unreal Tournament, if Tim Sweeney fully open sourced the original. Imagine the fun people could have with such gaming history.

@VileLasagna @gamingonlinux yeah blame everything on capitalism would you. in a communist society you're likely only going to have a different problem to complain about. for instance the game might've never been developed because the state deemed it a stupid game and didn't want to finance the development of it, or a game like doom might've been seen as too violent. out of touch bureaucrats and government officials are making these decisions, and don't want to take the risks.

If you look at a problem and it can be explained through the profit motive, then it is a problem caused by capitalism.

@halikular @gamingonlinux Nah, that's a capitalist framing of things that no only imagines communism in a very strict and awkward way but also fails to recognise the structure of capitalism itself. There is no bloody "free market" it's always been a lie, and it continues to be so. Fucking US installs dictatorships everywhere to protect economic interests and prevent development on the periphery, what part of that is "freedom"?

@VileLasagna @gamingonlinux What you've said is true, but there is no black and white and one isn't necessarily better than the other. Communist or capitalist absolutism would be miserable but a good balance creates something good for everyone. USA is probably to most capitalist country today, but in Scandinavia and the Baltics we have democratic socialism fueled by capitalism. It ensures a relatively free market and autonomy, yet offers welfare and social programs, no matter rich or poor.

@VileLasagna @gamingonlinux Communism isn't a foreign concept at all for most (on a local level). Throughout the world most close families could be considered communist as we generally help each other out without requiring reimbursement. Parents give to their children who then give back when their parents become older.
