The next time you hear Republicans in Congress complaining about increasing IRS enforcement, remember that the richest 1 percent of Americans evade as much as $163 billion in taxes each year.
@rbreich What is your take on the Fair Tax proposal? I've been doing some research and can find nothing on how the numbers work to fully fund the government and programs
@pleasesaveour@rbreich it's basically another tax reduction for the wealthy and tax increase for the poor. It shifts tax revenue out of income, property, and inheritance tax and into a 30% sales tax.
@rbreich worth noting government spending has gone down since 2022 and that 80% ($4.8 of 5.8 tr) are paid by income of Fed Gov, so only -$1tr is funded through debt, which has been declining. If GOP wants spending cuts letβs start with disgressional rather than mandatory spend and do away with subsidies, starting with fossiles ($20bn) followed by agriculture ($20bn). Other disgressionary spending incl. Congressional salaries & benefits: suspend until debt ceiling issue is resolved
@rbreich while this may appall your readers, this doesn't concern most poor republicans in my state of AR. They don't want to pay taxes at all. And as they hope to have a windfall and become rich, they don't want to have to pay taxes on those riches either. So, point being, they donβt blame rich people for not paying taxes.
@rbreich but this 87,000 new IRS agents nonsense needs to be debunked. A HUGE number of those agents are to replace existing agents and employees who are retiring or separating from service. Another huge percentage are to add IT and customer service staff... You know, to support the filing of online returns.. oh, and those 87,000 new EMPLOYEES... are going to be added over 10 years!!
