Imagine having an economic system where ecologically urgent and socially necessary things (renewable energy, public transit, affordable housing) are not produced simply because rich people cannot make enough profits doing so. Irrational barely begins to describe it.

@jasonhickel
Because it's entirely about the rich bloodsuckers. NIMBYs and local politics have absolute nothing to do with those things...

I'm all about reigning in the excesses of capitalism, but these are very poor examples indeed.

@iinavpov @jasonhickel
Class divisions between renters and landlords are reinforced by local and national governments precisely BECAUSE it benefits the wealthy.

These examples are absolutely relevant.

@nopasaran
Because it's well known that there are only renter's and landlords. Not, you know, a majority of (older) owners who vote...

These examples are absolutely irrelevant, and are a distinct illness of the UK, not of capitalism.

@iinavpov @jasonhickel
It’s difficult to parse what you’re saying. Replying with “Because…” frames it as an answer to a question, where none was posed.

What are you saying? That the dynamic IS or ISN’T as simple as renter/landlord?

@nopasaran
I'll let you think about that. Consult home ownership statistics, perhaps.

So much for quality engagement on Mastodon.

Suggest you head on back to the bird site if you wanna be an obtuse troll.

Help launch a new campaign to tax extreme wealth, redistribute power and restore democracy to ordinary people. RSVP to receive the Zoom link. https://actionnetwork.org/events/tax-wealth

Around the world a small number of obscenely rich people are growing wealthier every day while the vast majority fall further behind.

Extreme wealth is also one of the biggest barriers to action on the climate emergency. Right-wing populist parties like One Nation are gaining ground, backed by self-interested billionaires.

Tax wealth, not work.
It’s time for people power.

@jasonhickel
rational, rather, begins to describe what we should be imagining!!
@jasonhickel Actively destructive by choice.
@jasonhickel
Sounds like a place where life-saving medicine would also not be given, because same rich folks aren’t getting enough profit… 🙄
@jasonhickel News sciences article told of how they’ve managed to change bacteria DNA that makes it possible for the bacteria to consume plastics which can then be harvested for use in the pharmaceutical industry. The six gyres in our oceans will be used as food for the bacteria which in turn will help clean up the plastics in our water Think about that. First someone finally found a profit stream in cleaning up the water and secondly, we humans will be the the final stage in the consumption
@jasonhickel Humanity is suicidal and it’s fine as long as the 1% wildly increases their wealth exponentially for the remaining years in which our ecosystem can provide an existence - for those who can afford it.
@jasonhickel I listened to someone from the CBI on BBC Radio 4 yesterday morning banging on about economic growth. And inside my head I was shouting at the radio, "Why? How can anything possibly grow and grow and grow? Why is this even a goal?" I look forward to reading your latest book.
