If I could give a 20-year-old developer one piece of advice it would be this. There will be good times and bad times in this industry. Seasons when companies will be lining up to throw stupid money at you and times when everyone around you seems to be getting the axe. When you’re earning, save. Never be in a position where losing a job makes you desperate for a new job. This is a bad market for developers who are desperate. A good market for those who can relax a little and wait it out.
@EdGrosvenor Great advice! After working through the 2000 dot-com bubble and the 2008 recession, downturns are also great opportunities to slow down a bit, learn new things, test ideas, and establish the foundations of something great.
