Today's hosts are Dr. Raymond Francis Sarmiento, Director of UP Manila-National Telehealth Center (NTC), and Dr. Susan Pineda Mercado, Public Health Communications Expert and Adjunct Faculty at UP Manila-NTC.

Mercado: We decided to start with this topic because PGH is reporting more cases of pelvic pain.

Aguilar: There is a genetic predisposition to #endometriosis.

Aguilar: For many women, it is very common to have the symptom of pain, however, pain [alone] is not conclusive.

There is a recommendation for the work-up of the cause of pain.

Aguilar: We have very effective therapeutics for pelvic pain and medications are available locally.

Aguilar: Only when the first-line medications don't work will you start to consider the second-line of therapy.

Aguilar: For first-line therapy, there is a hierarchy of effectiveness.

You have to make sure that the patient understands that there are choices.

The next speaker is Dr. Gladys Tanangonan from the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at UP-PGH. She will also share her own insights about today's topic.

Tanangonan: Endometriosis does not increase the susceptibility to COVID-19 infections, but alters the manifestation of the disease.

Tanangonan: People with other conditions face barriers to accessing medical appointments and procedures [with the COVID-19 pandemic].

Tanangonan: While it can be frustrating and concerning to face delays and cancellations, staying in touch with a doctor is very important. That's where telemedicine and teleconsult comes in.

Tanangonan: What are the other things that can help a patient manage endometriosis during a pandemic?

Tanangonan: We also advise patients to keep a diary of their symptoms.

Tanangonan: Diet and lifestyle choice can have an effect on the magnitude of pain [of endometriosis].

Aguilar: Theoretically, there is a reversal of the lesions that may have developed.

Aguilar: Pain is real. Minsan it's a pity that we tend to minimize and normalize chronic pelvic pain in women.
