The artist did what was asked of them, and their work was chosen over dozens of other proposals. It is a conceptual piece, not a literal piece. Many other folks from the foundry in Walla Walla to the City of Boston had a role in approving, making and installing the piece. Not to pump the penis jokes to much but…..maybe it will grow on you.

Conceptual pieces are risky. Take the Chicago Picasso (, please). Public art, unless its very subject is conceptual, should hew closer to a broad public acceptance. I'm not giving any shrift to the decision making process. It's obvious a whole hierarchy of people had their heads up their heinies on this one. And the public is letting them know it.

Some folks who have seen the piece in person love it. Many who have not personally visited it don’t like it. Yes public art is risky and sometime risqué.
Not everyone is gonna like it. There is no formula that determines the piece is crap if a certain percentage of folks don’t like it.
I am reserving judgement until I get to stand next to it and walk under it.

I'm not a classisist by any means, and the pictures showing the different angles give it more interpretive handles.

After all, a Pomodoro from the wrong angle is just a cue ball.
