Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods were supposed to save the world. But fake meat turned out to be just another food fad.

Isn't the big problem for Beyond and Impossible that supermarkets have just figured out a good, much cheaper, frozen own-brand plant-based burger and nugget option? The offerings here in Switzerland have got much better over the last 3 years, someone else has to be buying them.

There is evidence that in Germany at least, plant-based alternatives (not necessarily the big brands though) are displacing meat and reducing consumption.

How Germany is kicking its meat habit

Germany has made itself an outlier in global meat consumption by embracing plant-based food and politics.

These are my favourites from @[email protected] and @[email protected]

I like that they are long-life, so I mostly do slightly more ambitious vegetarian cooking but when I can't be bothered/ something comes up, they're there without much specific planning and the kid will eat them.

@solar_chase had no idea this existed; def trying these with my kids this weekend (different brands in the US)
@solar_chase Sooo I like the Coop and Migros brands both, and I love meat, BUT if you want to go for meat where the animals have NOT led a maximally shitty life, substitutes are just cheaper. That's why I buy them. I tried Beyond burgers and sausage ONCE, both were definitely not for me, so back on the Quorn, Karma, and Delicorn train I was. Also Beyond was almost as expensive as the meat!
@solar_chase also super confused, Impossible Food isn't in some huge decline and seems to be doing pretty ok. The tone of the article would suggest otherwise
@solar_chase I think there's something in that. I'm puzzled at the weight the article puts on here benefits too. I mean people.rarely eat meat hamburgers for health reasons, why would you ou eat a plant based one to be healthy?
@solar_chase I've been keeping an eye on both Beyond and Impossible for a while. Whilst I'm not surprised that Beyond has failed to live up to the hype, Impossible's product and plan seems a lot more compelling to me, and I think they could succeed if they are able to get their prices a reasonable amount below similar quality animal products.
@solar_chase This xkcd infographic from 2014 (Earth's Land Mammals by Weight) is still sobering: https://xkcd.com/1338/
