Back to another horrible, hellish, horrendous, totally absurd battle over the debt ceiling

Friends, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen just announced that the federal government will hit the limit on total federal debt on January 19, just two days from now. After that, the Treasury Department will be forced to take “extraordinary measures” to avoid defaulting on the debt, which would likely trigger a global financial crisis.

@rbreich I am glad then President Clinton refused to cooperate with Republicans’ “economic blackmail.” I hope Biden does the same.

I remember, as you pointed out, after Republicans shut down the government, people were furious with Republicans and they suffered in the subsequent election.

@rbreich That is my money they are wanting to cut. I have been paying into social security and medicare with every paycheck for my entire working career. It is not ok for them to take my investment away from me because they mismanaged the account. There are better places to make spending cuts than taking retirement investments away.

@rbreich Do you think a time to radically overhaul monetary and fiscal strategies?There is no end to this problem and cyclical economic movement and unsolvable economic problems has made global economy so fragile .Excessively centralised economy at one end of the globe where a country with 4% population contributes to 25% of global GDP and ~60% of global market cap .There is urgency to shift this and US need to facilitate and not resist else the fault lines will create implosion
