One day after quoting MLK on MLK Day, Florida MAGA Gov Ron DeSantis cancels AP African American Studies Program, saying it ‘Lacks Educational Value’

This is literally white supremacist talking points & a reminder how much these people still hate MLK today.

Indeed, DeSantis banning AP African American Studies is a reminder of that old quote -- White privilege is when your history is the curriculum and every other history is an elective.

@QasimRashid From what I can see, it is the Florida Department of Education taking the action, using DeSantis's “Stop WOKE Act” (arrrgggh! I can't even type it without wanting to scream) to do so. This is disgusting and unjust and horrible. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.

And now, what do we do with the information? I'm far away from Florida. I guess keep chipping away at my own internalized racism, and the state I live in, which was founded on principles of exclusion and racism?

#Oregon where because of my "mulatto" status I would be given 39 stripes with a whip for daring to live here, were this still the 19th century. Seriously. That was in the founding constitution of Oregon. Crazy crazy stuff. I mean, Oregon isn't exactly "The North" but it is definitely "The West" and it is definitely Whitelandia. And I'm not the greatest ally but I try, esp as a small-town (very majority-white town) newspaper reporter & columnist.

From a German perspective it is shocking to see how little recent US history gets taught in schools etc. Seems White Privilege likes to erase or alter the facts to strengthen their power. 🤷😡

Not that we don't have idiots like that over here. But at least all the info is available and part of most kids' education.

@ruedi @QasimRashid you are exactly right! It wasn’t that long ago that the United Daughters of the Confederacy rewrote history textbooks for the confederate states. As you can imagine it whitewashed slavery & what the civil war was about. That’s where we get our biggest divide in the United States. People are being taught 2 different types of history.

@FrankRock @QasimRashid Florida already got turned around once, and one big reason it's now as "red" as it is is vote suppression. For example, Floridians voted to abolish felony disenfranchisement (disproportionately affecting Black citizens) some time ago, but the GOP govt add payment and filing requirements to regain voting rights, and made some highly publicized raids and criminal charges on Black people who attempted to vote w/o satisfying those requirements (after they were told they had).

presented, the content of this course is inexplicably contrary to Florida law and significantly
lacks educational value.
In the future, should College Board be willing to come back to the table with lawful, historically

Sadly I can only boost this once, which I did. I lived in FL for decades and yes it is a racist state, before DeSantis it was actually becoming less so, by inches not feet, not yet, but less, more accepting, I lived there I know.
DeSantis has taken it backwards to a dark time in FL history.
Andrew Gillum should've won in 2018, and what happened to him then and since reeks of Republican dirty tricks. The truth will out, eventually.
