Look at this lovely pebble I found today on Pillar Point beach (near HMB)

It’s so round and green!

Do I know any geologists who have an idea what it could be? Serpentinite? Jade? Jasper?

@natbat my rock identifier app says it's a type of jasper called African turquoise
@GrasshopperMan oooooh thanks! that doesn’t sound local!
@natbat it's fairly common in several countries outside of Africa apparently. What country are you from?
@natbat oh I just looked at ur profile. Yeah you can apparently find African Jasper in California
@GrasshopperMan interesting, so it’s naturally occurring here in California? Or do you think the pebble has had a long journey from Africa?
@GrasshopperMan which rock Id app do you use?
California Lithic Material

California Lithic Materials / California Chert

@natbat I use the "Rock Identifier" app on the Google Play store
@GrasshopperMan cool, if you zoom in on the location, what kind of information does it show, is it an area map of where the rock formations are?
@natbat I'm not exactly sure, as it currently has a glitch where, when you zoom in, it just shows a world map without the info shown here, but my best guess is that the numbers indicate reported instances of the stone being found in that area. Keep in mind that most semiprecious stones are rarely localized to one area and are often found in many different areas throughout the world
