Literally my entire adult life, I’ve been told that overpopulation would herald the demise of humanity. That it would destroy us.

Now, as population starts to shrink in the USA, Europe and China, we are again told to panic. That it’s a crisis.

Both these things cannot be true.

@lcrw overpopulation is a eugenicist myth. the important thing to remember is that our society has always been fascist, it is only recently that the mask is really slipping.
@lcrw overpopulation is bad for the environment as it means more people consuming more resources and less wild areas. Shrinking population is bad for economies as it means fewer people working jobs and thus less money being paid into old age pensions and/or being spent. Both things can be a crisis for different reasons, they can also be bullshit for different reasons. The answer like most things is how we respond (based on history, we’ll probably respond poorly)

@lcrw

The people whining about depopulation are (many of) the Economists and people who believe them. They've predicated everything on worshipping the exponential function, e^x, with no thought to the outcome of that. The notion of a "steady state" eludes them, also they fear to the death that that will end their Ponzi scheme of profits, that there will be no more RICH. The myth that supports everything thinking they too (in a million years) can be rich will be punctured.
