@dettlaff No, Proton Mail is not created by the CIA. But the point of E2EE is that trust in the service provider isn't necessary. Everything we do is open source and publicly auditable. Anybody can verify that our encryption works as advertised.
On September 6, 2021, despite the company's claim that it does not keep a log of IP addresses and that no personal information is required to create a secure email account, the French authorities were provided with the data of several Youth for Climate movement members. Users were then arrested.

@dettlaff Privacy is not the same as anonymity and like any company, Proton Mail can't ignore Swiss court orders. Anonymity requires user action (like using Tor, practicing good infosec) and is a user responsibility.
