This is an important article, but it makes it sound as if these discussions were started around the inspiration from the BLM movement. The statutes, as well as some Fiesta events have been out front issues and getting called out for the racism and brutality they symbolize for decades there. Search the newspaper archives for the articles starting at least in the 1980’s onward.
