Does anyone else wish capitalization didn’t matter here, to make it easier to follow hashtags?
Can we decide if it’s #artistsonmastodon? OR #artistsofmastodon ?
What’s the difference?

I thought it was the same hashtag whether capitalized or not? The capitalization---camel case, I think it's called--has been requested as it's easier for some to read/follow. That's why I do it, to be helpful.

As for the others, yeah there is a plethora and it's still not clear to me which are best so I just chose two I routinely use.

@crcollins if you type in #Art the hashtag #art comes up and I can’t tell if they both lead to the same place, but definitely the capitalized version is often replaced by a non-capitalized version. #ArtistsonMastodon is a perfect example. The first choice is non capitalized, so it requires effort to keep it capitalized. Maybe this is only true on the app? Not sure but I’m confused 🫤

@crcollins Please take a look at this search trying to capitalize #Art and nothing came up but the non capitalized hashtags. It seems to me they are two distinct
hashtags? When I typed in #art I got four thousand plus posts

I get the same results using both capitalized and non-capitalized versions. If you go into the results you see a mix of the two. This means the system isn't making a distinction between caps and non-caps, just looking at words, and either version of the hashtag works.

@crcollins Thank you 🙏some questions if you don’t mind — are you in an app? or the browser ?if an app, which one? Are you IOS based or android? If you type capitalized #Art do you get that as a choice ? Mine only gives me small case choices ans then won’t go away unless I choose the uncapitlized choice. Thanks!

I am currently on my Android phone, but I did the search on my computer. It shouldn't make a difference. Although, I am not sure if there are differences between instances. I'm on a different one than you. In general, I don't believe search engines distinguish between caps and non-caps. I got the lower case art results too but if you click on one and scroll down you should see a mix as I did.

@crcollins Thanks for taking the time -it could be me, it could be IOS - I had a different problem when I first came on and it was an IOS-based problem that they were trying to fix. I’m fairly disabled so scrolling down to find a matching hashtag is not always easy and I use dictation so I need to spell out capitalizations. I’m trying to find a way to streamline the posting process. I’m going to try the browser and see what happens. I’m using the Mastodon app.

Ah yeah I see the problem. You should do whatever works best for you. Social media shouldn't be stressful 😊 I am on the FediLabs app, by the way. I used to use the Mastodon app but notifications never worked.
